"To die would be an awfully big adventure." - J.M. Barrie.
"Release" was born from my confrontation with mortality. Reflecting on death shifted my perspective to one of beauty and wonder about the energy within my body after life. This piece captures the idealistic views of death before we experience it ourselves.
I used everyday materials rich in history: wood from my neighbor's burned home and an old steel chair. The chair is not special; in death, we are all equal. The smoked glass represents the vulnerable exterior we humans hold. While the chair's surface may seem beautiful, it can also be harmful. By covering it with glass, I illustrate an illusion of "specialness" and comment on human fragility.
